As the Saturday morning games started at 9am in gyms across the valley, the Southwest Showcase Vegas Prep tourney was one to watch, or one in the future not to miss. The tournament featured close to over 40 teams in the JV and Varsity brackets and attracted over 500 players from the state of Arizona alone. This tournament was directed by Ron Coleman, who has been hosting some of the best tournaments for several years and several of the players have gone onto play in college and the NBA.

“This is a new era of basketball which the players are more athletic and need to get more exposure. This also gives teams a chance to play before heading to Las Vegas for there chance to play at a high level in front of over 500 college coaches that will watching in Las Vegas for that next prospect,” said Coleman, who is trying to help young athletes get connected with college coaches.

The championship game in the Gold division was between Jump Athletic and Channing Frye Elite. The game started off with Jump Athletic jumping into a full court press and trapping Terrell Stoglin and Bo Barnes. Jump Athletic took an early 9-2 lead before the game got back into reach. In a high scoring game in which only they played two twenty minute halves the score was tied at half 25-25. As Channing Frye Elite came out of the gates running the game went back and forth, leading the way most of the second half were deep three point shots by Barnes. Barnes scored 19 points and Stoglin finished with 18 points and 13 assists as Channing Frye Elite won in a very close game in an almost packed gym 68-61.

Teams that performed very well in this tourney at the varsity level included:

JUMP ATHLETIC, AZ MAGIC-16, ARIZONA FUSION, TEAM M’PHASIS, ARIZONA WARRIORS, CHANNING FRYE ELITE, AZ STARS GARRETSON, ARIZONA FUTURE, BOY’S CLUB ALL STARS AND TEAM AZ

The surprise team in the tournament was Jump Athletic. This team has a lot of very skilled athletes and this team will never quit. The team plays together and has a good core of coaches that team the game of basketball and carry great sportsmanship. This is not your fly by night team. Look for this team to go along way in years to come. Jump Athletic was led by Duncan Schramm, who has been gaining interest from several D1 schools including Oregon State and Air Force.

One name to watch is freshman to be Alec Wintering, who will be at Sunnyslope High School, he is very exciting to watch and can run any high school program in the country. Wintering has great academic standards and has good family support and sportsmanship, when it’s all said and done he could be the best in 2013! One source close to college coaches mentioned he caught the eye of the University of California coaches two years ago and has been mentored by NY Knicks point guard Nate Robinson, maybe he will be a Pac 10 player.

The top performers who earned all tourney mentions were named below in no particular order.
